Step 1: Now we get to setting up sharing of drives so you and friends can see and copy each others files if you want. Of course not registered or commercial software, but shareware and freeware files =) Anyway, this is similar to previous steps. First we need to click that good old "Add.." button again (and again, the sucker is shown in green glow...) |
Step 2: Now we see the second window appear...recognize it yet? We want to highlight Client, and click the "Add.." button |
Step 3: Now we see a list similar to before. We again want to highlight "Microsoft" in the "Manufacturers:" section on the left. We will see a list appear on the right, we need to click on the first one, "Client for Microsoft Networks". Once you have that highlighted like the screen shot, click the "OK" button. |
Step 4: Your Network window should look something similar to the picture on the left, with the "Client for Microsoft Networks" on top. Now you can stop here, if you want to be greedy and just take and not share, OR (you better) continue onto the next step. |
Step 5: Again, we click the good old "Add.." button to bring up the second window of things we can add (hence its name). |
Step6: This time we want to highlight "Service", as shown in the picture to the right. Once we have "Service" selected, click on the "Add.." button. |
Step 7: We now do the same as before, and select "Microsoft" out of the "Manufacturers:" list. Then we need to select "File and printer sharing for Microsoft". Once that is selected, we need to click the "OK" button. |
Step 8: Ok, almost there now. Check and make sure your screen looks something similar to this, most importantly, the Client and File Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the top and bottom respectively. |
Step 9: Now we need to select the "Identification" tab on the top...it is the middle tab (shown here outlined in green...of course). Left click it now if you haven't already. |
Step 10: You should now see the following window, with three places to enter text. In the first area, "Computer Name:", you should enter your nickname that you use in games like Quake, Tribes, Quake, Halflife or the nick you use when you play Quake. Next, "Workgroup", you can almost enter anything in here, but "Lanparty" is a good choice. NOTE: Your host may tell you what "Workgroup" name people should enter there. I would enter that name there. Otherwise you will end up in a Workgroup by yourself and look right silly. Lastly, you can enter a short description of your computer. When you are 100% sure _EVERYTHING_ in these three sections (TCP/IP, IPX, and Sharing) was entered correctly, click the OK button on the network window. Now Windows will probably prompt you to enter the Windows CD and/or your network card's driver disk. You had better have both of these with you or you are screwed and might as well go home. SO REMEMBER YOUR NETWORK CARD'S DRIVER DISK! Once Windows is done loading all it needs to do, let it restart your system, and when it boots up, jump onto Quake or whatever and see if you can see the local network (or click in your Network Neighbourhood Icon on the desktop). If you don't see anything, recheck EVERYTHING in your network settings....if it looks right, and you are totally sure you checked and rechecked all the settings, and only then, you may ask a network savvy person for help or the host (not recommended, as they are busy doing other stuff). |
